Terms of Service

1. Agreement

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a binding agreement between you and Button.AI (“we,” “us”) governing your use of the Button.AI web application and related services (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you accept these Terms. If you are using the Service through a university or other institution, additional terms in our agreement with that institution may also apply, and control where they conflict with these Terms.

2. What the Service Is

Button.AI analyzes academic writing you submit and returns structured feedback: findings mapped to a research-grounded taxonomy of writing elements, per-dimension scores, and AI-assisted coaching. The Service is a formative feedback tool. It is not a grading authority, an academic evaluator of record, plagiarism-detection software, or a substitute for the judgment of your instructors, advisors, or institution.

3. Accounts

  • You must provide accurate registration information and keep your password secure.
  • You are responsible for all activity under your account.
  • Faculty, coach, and administrator roles carry access to student work as described in our Privacy Policy; holders of those roles agree to use that access only for legitimate educational purposes.

4. Academic Integrity and Acceptable Use

You are responsible for complying with your institution’s academic-integrity and AI-use policies. Button.AI provides feedback on writing you produced; it is designed to coach revision, not to author work on your behalf. You agree not to:

  • represent Service output as required-to-be-original work where that is prohibited;
  • submit content you do not have the right to submit;
  • probe, scrape, overload, reverse engineer, or interfere with the Service;
  • attempt to access another user’s documents or data;
  • use the Service to develop a competing writing-analysis dataset or product.

5. Your Content

You retain all ownership of the documents you write and upload. You grant us a limited license to store, process, transmit, and display your content solely to operate and improve the Service for you — including sending document text to our AI provider for analysis as described in the Privacy Policy. We do not sell your content and we do not use it to train foundation models.

6. AI Output

Feedback is generated by large language models. It can be incomplete, imprecise, or wrong. Scores are developmental signals, not grades, and may differ from faculty evaluation. You are responsible for verifying any claim, citation, or suggestion before relying on it.

7. Plans, Quotas, and Fees

The free plan includes a monthly credit allowance that resets each month and does not roll over. Paid plans (described at /pricing) carry larger allowances and are billed in advance on a recurring basis once billing is enabled; institutional plans are contracted separately. We may change prices or quotas prospectively with reasonable notice; changes never apply retroactively to a period you have already paid for.

8. Termination

You may delete your account at any time from Settings, which permanently removes your content as described in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, create security risk, or are required to be terminated by law, and will tell you why unless legally prevented.

9. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claims arising out of the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or fifty US dollars. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, including academic consequences arising from reliance on AI-generated feedback.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. For material changes we will give notice in the app or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
